Enjoy a Yakatabune Cruise from Kachidoki!

Tokyo bay Harumi

What is a Yakatabune?

A Yakatabune is a traditional Japanese houseboat that has been popular since the Edo period. These boats are primarily used for sightseeing and leisure. Inside the boat, you will find tatami mats where you can enjoy Japanese cuisine such as tempura and sashimi. Additionally, many Yakatabune are equipped with karaoke machines, allowing you to enjoy a party while taking in the scenic views.

Yakatabune from Kachidoki: Harumiya

I had the pleasure of experiencing a Yakatabune cruise with Harumiya, which departs from Kachidoki in Chuo Ward, Tokyo. The boarding point is about a 5-minute walk from Kachidoki Station, along the canal. Since there are no large signs, it can be a bit tricky to find, so it’s best to arrive early to ensure you don’t miss the boat.

Inside the Boat

Upon arrival at the boarding point, the crew will guide you onto the boat. Once inside, you will find a traditional Japanese seating area with long tables and cushions on the floor. You’ll need to remove your shoes before stepping onto the tatami mats.

The menu features an array of traditional Japanese dishes, including tempura, sashimi, sukiyaki, tamago tofu, and clear soup. The food is plentiful and delicious. The tempura is freshly fried and crispy, while the sashimi is fresh and flavorful. Despite being on a boat, the ride is smooth and does not cause seasickness.

Scenic Views and Entertainment

As the boat moves along, you can enjoy stunning night views of Tokyo from the windows. You’ll see famous landmarks such as Tokyo Tower, Odaiba, and the Rainbow Bridge beautifully illuminated. You can move around the boat to take in the views from different angles, including from the roof.

The cruise lasts about two and a half hours, giving you plenty of time to relax, chat, and enjoy the scenery. There is also karaoke on board, which adds to the fun. Since our group had the boat to ourselves, we enjoyed singing karaoke together.
