Discover Toyocho: A Local Tokyo Neighborhood

Toyocho is a lively and convenient neighborhood located in the heart of Koto Ward, home to the local city office. Although it doesn’t feature major tourist attractions, it offers a great peek into the everyday life of Tokyo residents.

The area is filled with affordable supermarkets like Ikiiki Seisen Shokuhin and Seiyu, as well as many casual restaurants and small shopping streets. You’ll feel the vibrant community spirit as you walk around.

Toyocho may not attract many international tourists, but it’s right next to more popular neighborhoods like:

  • Monzen-Nakacho, known for its traditional shitamachi charm
  • Toyosu, a newly developed waterfront area famous for Toyosu Market

If you’re interested in exploring real Tokyo life, Toyocho is a perfect place to take a break from the tourist crowds.

Easy Access from Central Tokyo

Toyocho is just a 9-minute ride on the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line from Otemachi Station, which is right next to Tokyo Station. It’s surprisingly convenient to get to, even for a short side trip.

A Hidden Bakery Loved by Locals: Moncher Toyocho Factory

Just a 5-minute walk from Toyocho Station, tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood, you’ll find Moncher Toyocho Factory — a bakery so good it was selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Bakeries by Tabelog, a respected Japanese gourmet review site.

The bakery is attached to a small factory, with a very simple storefront — just a compact counter. In fact, it’s so hidden you might walk past it without realizing!

What’s on the Menu?

You’ll find a menu displayed outside featuring 4 to 5 types of Danish-style bread (danish loaf). I chose the classic plain danish, and it was handed to me almost immediately after ordering — very smooth and friendly service.

The bread is huge — one loaf is enough to last a family of four for 3 to 4 days. It’s best enjoyed fresh or stored in the freezer for later. Though the price may seem high at over 1,200 yen per loaf, the size and quality make it a great value.

How Does It Taste?

When I got home, I first tried it plain. It was already sweet and flavorful even without toasting. Later, I toasted a slice — and the sweetness intensified, making it even more delicious. It’s the kind of bread that feels indulgent, yet comforting.

Open 24 Hours!

One unique point of Moncher Toyocho Factory is that it’s open 24 hours — perfect if you’re on a tight schedule or just craving something sweet after a late-night adventure.
